Clogged kitchen sink with garbage disposal?

A clogged kitchen sink is frustrating enough, but when your garbage disposal is involved, it can quickly escalate into a messy situation. Before you panic, walk through the steps to safely and effectively unclog your sink.

Safety first

Before you do anything, make sure the garbage disposal is turned OFF. You do not want to risk injury while trying to clear the clog. If you are unsure where the circuit breaker is, turn it off at the main electrical panel.

Troubleshooting steps

Check for power. Sometimes the disposal has simply tripped. Check the reset button on the bottom of the unit; if it has popped out, push it back in. Check your circuit breaker too.

Inspect the disposal. Use a flashlight to look inside. If you see a visible obstruction, like silverware or large food pieces, remove it carefully with tongs or pliers. NEVER put your hand inside the disposal.

Try a plunger. If there is standing water in the sink, use a flat-bottomed plunger. Make sure it seals over the drain opening, plunge vigorously up and down for several minutes, then remove it and see if the water drains.

Baking soda and vinegar. Pour one cup of baking soda into the drain, follow with one cup of vinegar, let it fizz for 30 minutes, then flush with hot water.

Check the P-trap. Place a bucket under the P-trap (the curved pipe under the sink), loosen the slip nuts on either side, carefully remove the trap and clean out any debris. Reassemble, tighten the nuts, and run water to check for leaks.

Use an auger (drain snake). If the clog is further down the pipe, feed a drain snake into the drain and crank the handle to break up the clog. Remove the snake and flush with hot water.
