What usually turns out to be wrong

• Running constantly. Flapper, fill valve or a chain catching. Cheap to fix and wasteful to ignore.
• Water on the floor at the base. Usually the wax ring, sometimes the closet flange underneath it. This one is worth acting on, because the subfloor takes the damage.
• Rocking or loose. Bolts, flange or a floor that has moved. Rocking breaks the seal, which brings you back to the leak above.
• Clogs, again and again. Either a low flow first generation unit that never flushed well, or a problem further down the line.
• Weak flush. Mineral blocking the rim jets. Common with hard water here and often fixable.
• Cracked tank or bowl. Not repairable. Replacement.

Repair or replace

Most toilets are worth repairing. Internals are inexpensive and replaceable, and a well made toilet from the 1990s often flushes better than a budget new one. Replacement makes sense when the porcelain is cracked, when the unit is a first generation low flow that has never worked properly, or when you are changing the bathroom anyway.

What a replacement involves

Removing the old unit, checking the flange and subfloor underneath, replacing the wax ring and supply line, setting and leveling the new toilet, then testing it. The flange is the part that matters and the part that gets skipped. A new toilet on a corroded flange leaks within a year.

Hard water and rim jets

If a toilet's flush has weakened over years rather than suddenly, mineral has usually closed up the small holes under the rim. That is often recoverable, and it is one of the reasons households here end up treating the water.

Toilet questions we get asked

My toilet runs for a few seconds every so often. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is a slow leak past the flapper refilling the tank. It is one of the most common sources of a water bill that has crept up, and it is one of the cheapest repairs there is.

There is water around the base. Can I just tighten the bolts?
Tightening a rocking toilet sometimes helps and sometimes cracks the base. If water is reaching the floor the wax ring has already failed and it needs lifting and resealing.

Why does one toilet in the house clog constantly?
If it is only that one, suspect the toilet: a poor flushing design, or something lodged in the trap. If other fixtures are slow too, the line is the more likely answer.

Can you install a toilet I already bought?
Yes. Keep the packaging until it is installed and tested, in case anything is chipped.
