Your sewer line runs from the house to the city main, buried, doing its job without asking anything of you. When it fails you usually learn about it the same way: sewage coming up in the lowest drain in the house, often a downstairs shower or a tub.

Why they fail here

Two reasons, and the age of your house tells you which one is yours. Homes built through the 1950s to the 1970s often have cast iron, which corrodes from the inside until the bottom of the pipe is gone. Newer homes have clay or PVC, which the North Texas soil moves. Clay swells with rain and shrinks in drought, and joints separate. Tree roots find the gap either way.

Sewer repair usually means opening ground at the failure point. Before anything starts you will know what has to be dug, what the yard will look like afterwards, and what the finished work includes. Nobody enjoys surprises on this kind of job, least of all us.

How do I know it is the sewer line and not a drain clog?
The pattern tells you. A single slow fixture is a local clog. Several drains backing up at once, a toilet bubbling when you run the sink, or sewage appearing in the lowest drain in the house points at the main line.

Will you have to dig up my yard?
Usually at least part of it, at the failure point. How much depends on where the fault sits and how deep the line runs. You will see the camera footage and the plan before you decide anything.

Is a sewer line my responsibility or the city's?
The section from your house to the connection at the main is generally the homeowner's. The main itself is the city's. Where the boundary sits varies, and it is worth establishing before work is quoted.

Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line replacement?
Coverage depends on your specific policy. Contact your insurance carrier about what yours covers, and do it before work starts rather than after.
