Start with the water bill

A water bill that climbed and stayed high, with nothing different about how you use water, is the most reliable early sign of a water line leak. It is also the one people explain away for the longest.

Two different lines, two different jobs

• The service line. From the meter at the street to the house. Buried, under lawn or driveway, and the homeowner's responsibility from the meter onward in most cases.
• The lines inside. Running through walls, the attic or under the slab to each fixture. Failures here show up as damp drywall, ceiling stains or a slab leak.

Other signs

• A patch of lawn that stays green or soggy in a dry spell
• Water pressure that has dropped across the whole house
• The sound of running water with everything off
• Air or discoloration when you first turn on a faucet
• The meter dial turning when no water is being used

Our plumbers evaluate the plumbing system and perform appropriate testing to help determine the source of the problem. Once we identify the issue, we'll explain the available repair options and provide upfront pricing before work begins.

Repair, reroute or replace

A single failure on an otherwise sound line is a spot repair. A line that has failed twice is telling you something, and replacing the run is usually cheaper than a third repair plus the water you lost between them. For lines under a slab, rerouting overhead often beats opening concrete.

Remember the water bill from the top of this page. On a leak that has been running for months, the water you have already paid for is often a meaningful fraction of the repair.

Service line replacement is permitted work and we handle it. We will also tell you honestly what the yard will look like afterwards and what we do and do not put back.

No water, or water where it should not be?

Shut off the main at the meter box and call (972) 238-5585. If you have never found your shutoff, that is worth doing on an ordinary afternoon rather than in the dark.

Water line questions we get asked

My bill doubled but I cannot see a leak. Where is it?
Underground or under the slab, most likely. Turn everything off and watch the meter: if it still moves, water is going somewhere. That test costs nothing and settles the question.

Is the line from the street mine or the city's?
Generally the city owns the main and the meter, and the homeowner owns the line from the meter to the house. Confirm it for your address before agreeing to work.

Can a water line be replaced without digging up the driveway?
Sometimes. It depends on where the line runs, its condition and what sits above it. We will lay out the options for your specific run and what each one means for the yard before you decide anything.
